The Tale of Holi
Holi is joyous
How did it originate?
There are many stories behind Holi (Hindu festival), one of them which date back to Satya Yuga is described below.
Hiranyakashipu, the arrogant king of demonic Asuras had a boon, he could be killed by neither a human being nor an animal, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither at day nor at night, neither by Astra (projectile weapons) nor by any Shastra (handheld weapons), and neither on land nor in water or air.
Children would have more fun
Hiranyakashipu threatened people to worship him, but his son (Prahlada) always worshipped & remained devoted to Vishnu by ignoring his father's words.
The king punished his own son in many ways for not following his commands, but none of them affected Prahlada.
The crowd covered by colors
Holika (Hiranyakashipu's sister) tricked Prahlada and made him sit on a pyre (Fire) with her, but Prahlada survived while Holika burned. Vishnu, took an avatar in the form of Narasimha killed the king.
People celebrated the relief from Hiranyakashipu every year with a "Holika bonfire"(burning wood) which signifies the victory of good over evil.
Sometimes, Holi would be romantic
Over the years, colors are added to this celebration and made it more joyful.
