Vasavamba, the diety of business class

Vasavamba

According to Hinduism, society divides into Brahmins (scholars), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (business merchants), Shudras (laborers).

During the 11th century, Vasavamba was born to Kusumamba and Kusumasresti on the 10th of Vaishaka, her father was a king of Arya Vaishyas and ruling the kingdom of Penugonda region.

Kusumasresti extended his support to King (of other castes) Vishnu Vardhana who was expanding his empire. Vishnu Vardhana noticed Vasavamba during a visit to Penugonda.

Vishnu Vardhana, who was impressed by the charm of Vasavamba had put his marriage proposal in front of Kusumasresti to marry her.

But, Vasavamba denied Vardhana's proposal which made him to capture her by force. So, he commanded his soldiers to get her.

During this time, Kusumasresti arranged an emergency meeting with the people of 714 gotras in his kingdom. Out of 714, only 102 gotras supported Vasavamba's decision and other 612 gotras suggested Kusumasresti to marry her daughter with Vardhana for benefits.

The head (Bhaskaracharya) of the emergency conference supported 102 gotras and suggested Kusumasresti not to conduct marriage with Vardhana. In this way, the unity of Arya Vaishyas was broken and remained with 102 gotras!

Kusumasresti and 102 gotras prepared for the defense of Penugonda against Vardhana. But Vasamba, a kind-hearted woman told them "No lives should be sacrificed for the sake of me. Instead, let us rebel in a novel way,  we can control war through non-violence and self-sacrifice."

Vasavamba had chosen self-sacrifice and asked all 102 gotras "Will you plunge into this holy fire along with me?", to which all people said "YES".

Vasamba and all 102 gotras entered the holy fire, but the fire didn't touch them instead all people glittered like gold. Goddess has shown her Viswaroopa and said " “I am the incarnation of Adiparasakthi. I am here to safeguard the dignity of woman, protect Dharma and reveal the magnanimity of Vaisyas to the world."

Vasavamba explained Vaisya dharma and blessed 102 gotras with Moksha.

In the current era, Vasavamba is Kula Daivam (goddess of Arya Vaisya Caste) for the South Indian Komati(Business) community. And they offer prayers to her with uttermost devotion.
