Eat, Sleep, Mate, and Defend are enough for life?

Eat, sleep, mate, and defend are the basic needs of all living entities. In addition to basic needs, humans have got some extra needs that are to be fulfilled.

To know about those needs, we need to look at Maslow's "A Theory of Human Motivation".

According to Maslow's theory, needs are classified into five levels.

Physiological needs:
If a person who is lacking food, safety, love, and esteem, the person's highest priority will be food. Because a person has to be alive to meet other needs.

Food, water, sleep, air, clothing fall under this category. Maslow considered these needs as important, if these needs are not satisfied up to a certain extent, all other needs(education, properties, relationships, etc,.) become simply non-existent.

Safety needs:
After meeting physiological needs, the vision goes towards safety and control.

The need for a peaceful society that is free of criminals, wild animals, and assaults, etc., will come into the picture.

The desire for savings and insurance of various kinds (medical, dental, unemployment, disability, old age) take part in life.

Love needs:
The love and belongingness needs will emerge when physiological and safety needs are fairly well gratified.

Wife/husband, children, and friends play a significant role in a person's life if he is above 2 levels in Maslow's chart.

Sex may be considered as a physiological need for few, but chief ingredients that create sexual behavior in us are love and affection.

Esteem needs:
Desire for the high evaluation of themselves, for example, self-respect or self-esteem, and for the esteem of others.

These needs are categorized into two types, (first)desire for strength, achievement, adequacy, confidence in the face of the world. (Second)The desire for reputation or prestige, recognition, attention, importance, or appreciation which are purely dependant on others.

Need for self-actualization:
After satisfying all needs, (not always) a kind of discontent and restlessness would be developed if an individual is not doing what he had desired.

To be happy, a singer should sing, an artist must paint, a poet must write.

So, it is required to satisfy all needs for a successful and joyous life.
